There's an App for That: Assistive Technology 3/28/12
Explore guiding principles for Assistive Technology decisions,
including promoting independence, challenging assumptions, and providing mistake tolerant vs. mistake intolerant instructional
materials. We will discuss remediation and compensation, free is good, Toolbelt Theory and Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
which promotes the importance of offering multiple methods of engagement, representation and expression over traditional instruction
methods. Participants will
discover alternatives to traditional materials which, too often, ARE the disability for students. Students with learning challenges
due to language based learning disabilities, or intellectual disabilities as well as students with Autism Spectrum Disorders
are engaged by technology. Struggling learners thrive with technology; technology taps into students’ strengths. It’s
time to take advantage of that reality!
